Mahtomedi lost a close game in the first round of the state softball tournament Thursday, then picked up the program’s first-ever state tournament win in the consolation bracket.
The unseeded Zephyrs fell to No. 3 Becker 5-4 as the Bulldogs scored in the last of the seventh in the Class 3A quarterfinal at North Mankato.
Mahtomedi regrouped quickly, taking a 9-0 lead in two innings against Detroit Lakes on the way to a 13-4 victory, banging out 16 hits.
The Zephyrs (14-9-1), Section 4AAA champions, will close the season in the fifth-place game against Benilde-St. Margaret’s (17-9) on Friday at 9 a.m.
Mahtomedi has made only one previous state trip in softball, 2016, and went 0-2.
Top Zephyr hitters Thursday were Emma Nelson, 5-for-8, and Megan Neubeck, 5-for-9.
Reaching the Class 3A finals were Mankato West and Northfield.
Becker 5, Zephyrs 4
Mahtomedi took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Becker (20-5) scored four in the third inning. The Zephyrs got a run in the seventh to pull even, but couldn’t hold the Bulldogs in the bottom half as Cadence Koste ripped a double to knock in the game-winner.
Grace Hadlich, Neubeck and Nelson were each 2-for-4, with Hadlich knocking in two runs. Claire Wirka had an RBI single. Haley Rosenthal pitched the distance, giving up 11 h its, striking out three.
Corrie Weise pitched for Becker, giving up seven hits, striking out five, and went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Koste was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Krista Paulson doubled home a run.
Zephyrs 13, Detroit Lakes 4
Leading a 16-hit offense, and knocking in three runs each, were Neubeck, 3-for-5 with a double; Lauren Laviano, 3-for-4; and Olivia Van Hout, 2-for-5.
Nelson was 3-for-4 with a double. She scored two runs, as did Van Hout, Neubeck, and Gina Sorini. Kiki Valsvik was 2-for-4. Anna Wohlwend had a double and RBI.
Rosenthal pitched the distance, giving up seven hits and two walks, striking out five. She was 1-for-2 with an RBI at the plate.
