Mahtomedi lost the fifth-place game at the state tournament to Benilde-St. Margaret’s 9-8 on Friday, giving up four runs in the last of the seventh.
Meanwhile, the Zephyrs supplied one of the highlights plays of the state tournament, a triple play keyed by Megan Nuebeck.
The Zephyrs, who lost to Becker 5-4 and beat Detroit Lakes 13-4 on Thursday at Caswell Park in North Mankato, took an 8-5 into the final inning, but couldn’t put the Red Hawks away. Sarah Houlihan’s double drove home the winning runs.
Grace Hadlich was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Mahtomedi. Anna Wohlwend had a single and two RBIs. Claire Wirka was 1-for-4 with a run and RBI.
Haley Rosenthal and Abbie Kujawa pitched for Mahtomedi, while Abbabelle Hilson and Tibby Stewart pitched for BSM (18-9).
The triple play came when BSM had runners at first and second and a line drive was hit. Neubeck, at second base, snagged the liner, tagged second base, and threw behind the runner at first.
Mahtomedi finished the season 14-10-1.
