WHITE BEAR LAKE — Dave Ashley and John Dierkhising's White Bear Lake girls soccer crew finished fifth in the Suburban East Conference this fall with a 4-3-1 record.
The Bears were ousted in the opening round of section play by Mahtomedi. They finished with a 6-9-2 overall mark that included four 1-0 setbacks.
"Our team worked extremely hard, and outstanding leadership was provided by our three senior captains Katie Zoborowski, Caitlin Broberg and Abby O'Rourke," offered Ashley. "This was an extremely close-knit team.”
The team also excelled in the classroom, earning the Minnesota State High School Soccer Coaches Association Silver Academic Award. Receiving individual Academic Excellence Awards were seniors Broberg, Zoborowski, and O'Rourke; juniors Alison Hinck, Kelly Buhl, and Anna Kaiser; and sophomores Avori Bastemeyer and Molly Riley.
Goaltender Kaiser was cited team MVP at the awards banquet and was also Honorable Mention All Conference. Molly Riley was named Outstanding Defensive Player, and Avori Bastemeyer was Most Improved. iBear Awards (for players who personify the words “intensity, integrity, indomitable will and inspiring”) went to Caitlin Broberg and Katie Zoborowski.
Defender Hinck, midfielder Buhl and attacker Riley earned Suburban East All-Conference recognition, and defender Broberg, midfielder and Morgan Newpower joined Kaiser as Honorable Mention All Conference. Defender Tessah Anderson was named to the Section 4AA All-Tournament squad.
