ROSEVILLE – A Gopher 5 jackpot worth $1,366,581 hit in the May 1 drawing was claimed by three brothers on May 31.
Matthew Benson of Mahtomedi, Jason Benson of Hudson, Wisconsin, and Timothy Benson of Stillwater split the $1.3 million jackpot three-ways — each receiving $455,527 (before the required tax withholdings).
The winning ticket was purchased by Timothy who said they always had this understanding that, “If someone wins anything significant enough, we would all share it.” Matthew jokingly added, “Otherwise we would be borrowing money from him anyway, so it stops the whole family feud!”
The brothers, who all work in construction, said they plan to pay off debt and save for retirement.
The winning ticket was purchased at Freedom Valu Center, located at 4852 Highway 61 N. in White Bear Lake. The business earned a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
The winning Gopher 5 numbers drawn on May 1 were 2-6-19-29-34. Gopher 5 is a Minnesota-only game with jackpots that start at $100,000 and grow until won. The overall odds of winning the Gopher 5 jackpot are approximately 1 in 1.5 million.
