One of the oldest businesses in Vadnais Heights is closing for good March 30.
Garceau’s Hardware has operated on Centerville Road for 52 years. A Garceau family member has operated a business on the spot for 80 years — all of them named David.
Grandfather Dave Garceau opened a grocery store and butcher shop with his sister Viola in 1932. They added a hardware store and gas station, which was expanded in 1960 by the next-generation Dave. The store is now owned and managed by a grandson, also named Dave.
“Business has changed,” said the third-generation Garceau. “More sales are Internet-based and our overhead is high. The lack of snow these past years has been difficult. Snowmobile sales were a big part of our business. And we just don’t see light at the end of the tunnel.”
His partner, Jim DeBilzan, has been with the store 40 years; Garceau, 35 years. They have no plans to retire.
“It is what it is,” Garceau said. “It’s been a great ride and we’ve had great customers.”
To thank them, the store is holding a customer appreciation day Feb. 23. People are invited to stop by and reminisce about old times and enjoy complimentary hot dogs and soda.
A liquidation sale is currently underway with discounts on everything. The 2.5-acre property is also for sale.
