WHITE BEAR LAKE — Someone nominated the high school drumline to play during Super Bowl Live.
“I'm not sure how that happened,” said Jeremy Rockford, drumline coach and White Bear Lake Area High School – North Campus band director. After receiving the news, the drumline had to complete an audition and the Super Bowl committee accepted them.
The drumline will be playing along Nicollet Mall two days of the 10-day fan festival in Minneapolis leading up to Super Bowl LII Feb. 4. The event is free and open to the public and includes entertainment, food and activities.
The Bears drumline will be one of those entertainers.
They will be playing on and off from 4 to 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3. Rockford said he is still receiving details about when exactly and what exactly the group will be performing.
In the meantime, the drumline is polishing its current pieces and prepared to drop anything but a drumstick to add more music to its repertoire.
The directors have a bigger group this year than it has had in awhile, Rockford noted. Currently, 27 members round out the drumline.
“They have done an outstanding job. I am super proud of their progress,” he added.
The drumline is also well equipped to play on the big Super Bowl Live stage — last year, a White Bear Lake alum donated money to replace its equipment, Rockford said.
