A seventh-inning rally by White Bear Lake fell just short and the Bears lost to Mounds View 3-2 Friday, despite two pitchers combining for a four-hitter, on the Mustangs field Friday.
The Bears, down 3-0, got three walks and an RBI double by Spencer Oxton, off reliever Robert Hogan in the seventh, before another reliever, Alec Wahlin, came in to notch the final two outs, one by strikeout.
The Bears fell to 2-11 and Mounds View improved to 12-4.
John Solfest blanked the Bears for six innings on four hits and one walk, striking out eight, picking up the win.
The Mustangs’ four hits came from the first two batters as Jonah Sparks was 2-for-4 and Brett Bateman 2-for-4 with a run..
Bear starter Trent Schoeberl was nicked for two runs in the first on a bloop single by Sparks, a bouncer through the hole by Bateman, and two infield errors. and a throwing error. He pitched three innings (three walks, three strikeouts) and took the loss.
Alex Grygar pitched the last three innings, allowing a hit, four walks and one run.
Mounds View got a key insurance run in the sixth as Ian Bahn hit a sac fly after John Abercombie walked and stole two bases.
The Bears outfield made a couple nice plays behind Schoeberl as right fielder Spencer Oxton threw out a runner at home and center fielder Dom Smith made a diving catch of a sinking line drive.
