MAY TOWNSHIP — Police have arrested a man accused of shooting a woman and leaving her for dead on a May Township road June 9.

Luis Alfredo Cortez Mendoza, 23, of St. Paul, was taken into custody Saturday, June 15. He appeared in Washington County District court Monday, June 17, on charges of attempted first-degree murder for the benefit of a gang, attempted second-degree murder for the benefit of a gang and kidnapping for the benefit of a gang. Bail has been set at $2 million. 

Mendoza's next appearance is Washington County District Court is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, June 24. 

At 2:39 a.m. on Sunday, June 9, deputies were dispatched to a call of a woman found in the middle of a roadway near St. Croix Trail N. and 124th St. N. in May Township. Responding officers determined that she had suffered from a gunshot wound. She was transported to an area hospital.
