Every year when January rolls around, the Hugo Lions start thinking about Good Neighbor Days and begin planning how to make this year’s community festival better than the last one.
This year’s theme, “Seize the Day, Get Out and Play,” is a tribute to the brand-new playground at Lions Park, installed last fall. The previous play structure was installed over 20 years ago and was in dire need of replacement.
“We really wanted to target the new playground that finally came to fruition,” said Lion Dan Balthazor. “We also wanted to keep it catchy and lighthearted.”
2019 Hugo Good Neighbor Days, held at Lions Park behind City Hall, will feature carnival rides, karaoke, beer garden, wine tasting, parade, historical exhibit, petting zoos, bands, Baron of the Bubble, bingo, inflatables and more. Of course, the Hunt for the Golden Spike is also on. Make sure to visit presspubs.com for contest rules and the latest clues.
New this year
Many of the new events this year are targeted at families. “Every year we try to bring more family-friendly things to Good Neighbor Days,” Balthazor said. “We want to have a variety, so it is not just the beer garden and music.”
This year, children (ages 14 and under) can enjoy the free Kid Zone inflatables from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The bouncy entertainment is sponsored by the Dead Broke Saddle Club. “It is another fun thing for that tough age that maybe can’t get on some of the rides yet,” Balthazor said.
In addition to the traditional petting zoo and pony rides, this year Cock-A-Doodle Zoo of Scandia will bring more unique animals, including a kangaroo, wallaby, alligator, cavies, African porcupine, lemurs, tortoises and capybara.
The new craft and vendor fair on Saturday will feature Woods by Ron, Infusion Gardens, Missy’s Boutique, JJ’s Product Development, Pure Romance, Color Street, Pampered Chef, Thirty-One, Remix, Scentsy, LulaRoe, Norwex, Young Living/Willgrin Essentials, Hempworx, Usborne, Fashionable Magnetic Jewelry, DoTerra, Joyful Living – Chalk Couture, Advanced Spinal Silo Apparel LLC and more.
The Lions have also added a Backyard Ribfest contest sponsored by Grundhofer’s Old Fashion Meats on Saturday (see the full story in this week’s issue of The Citizen) and a bean bag tournament, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
