BLAINE — Even the slightest edge in the grocery wars can mean big bucks for major retailers.

It was the ability to sell groceries that was at the core of plans to build a new Wal-Mart store north of Ball Road at Lexington Avenue late last year, according to Blaine city officials. Original plans have since been pulled, but experts have said it wouldn’t come as surprise if a new proposal pops up.

Gee Nick, nice puff piece defending Walmart!

Why didn't you mention in your article the increase from 2900 vehicles a day to an estimated14,000 vehicles and added semi traffic a day that Walmart will bring to our neighborhoods. How about stating FACTS instead of quoting Mr. Langer, someone that has not researched the effects of a Walmart on property values and the demise of neighborhoods it builds next to.

And this quote by the same Mr. Langer, "“People who are used to an open field have a negative feeling toward something new,” he said. “But when somebody new moves in they have no memory of the field. If they want the property, they want it.” What about OUR property rights? When somebody NEW moves in? You've got to be kidding me! Walmart is not somebody, it is a corporation larger in wealth than all but 3 world nations. And a Festival Foods in Hugo is not even close to a 24 hour 7 day a week operation such as a Walmart. Again not a valid comparison.

Why didn't you mention that the Walmart would be only 150 feet from peoples driveways on Ball Road, running semi's in and out all times of day and night. Did you do any research on the effects of 68,000 gallons of water that Walmart uses daily? We have a water shortage!!!!!!!!! 5 wells have been shut down out here over the past few years. Where is the water going to come from??

And by the way, we BCFSG don't meet "informally, to blow off steam'"!!!!!! WE are activists and are organized as a Non Profit. We have an elected board and bylaws. We have held a community meeting that brought 80 of our neighbors to Blaine City Hall to express their concerns. We have door knocked and organized a mailing of 300 letters to our City Council Members and the Mayor.

Disappointment can't even begin to describe how I feel about your so called in depth investigation of this issue.
