Elvin M. Engeseth, age 51, of Eden Valley died on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012 at the Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield, Minn. Elvin Myron Engeseth, the son of Elvin and Ramona (Emery) Engeseth was born on Jan. 6, 1961 in the Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn. Throughout his life he lived in Richfield, Pine City, Cambridge, Mora, Avon and Eden Valley. He was united in marriage to Juanita DuBious in 1980. Elvin enjoyed watching football, fishing, gardening, cooking, playing cards, and frisbee and horseshoes. He will be remembered for his storytelling ability and his sense of humor.
Larry Michael Schroeder of Brook Park died on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012 at FirstLight Hospital in Mora. He was 63 years old.
Jigger was born March 31, 1938 to Chester and Violet (Brogren) Cornelius in Chengwatana Township, Pine City. He passed away at Fairview Lakes Hospital in Wyoming, Minn. after a short battle with cancer on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 at the age of 73.
Gale Norman Wolfe, age 74, of Grasston, Minn., passed away peacefully at his home on Feb. 8, 2012.
Mary Ellen Phipps, age 78, of Pine City, formerly of St. Paul, passed away on Feb. 9, 2012, in her home surrounded by family, after a short battle with cancer.
Edward "Fast Eddie" Wilbert of Pine City died Monday, Feb. 13 at his home at the age of 67 years.
Robert "Rob" Orvis, age 52, of Pine City, died Feb. 7, 2012 at his home.
Robert Lynn Wallace, 92, died Jan. 23, 2012 in Chandler, Ariz. He was born in his grandparents' house in Pine City on Feb. 9, 1919. His father, Carl, worked on the railroad and moved the family frequently. Bob lived with his grandparents for school attendance from 7-12 grade. After two years at Macalester College, he learned telegraphy and was employed by Northern Pacific Railroad in Carlton, Minn.
Rita Anne Webber (Thibodeau) was born on April 18, 1925 to Achille and Parmelie (Menard) Thibodeau in Anoka, Minn. She moved with her parents to Pine City in 1932 to the Frank Pehler farm and in 1937 to the Gust Schwartzwald farm. Rita attended the country school District #69 northeast of Pine City and then continued her education at Pine City High School.
JoAnn Mary (Kozak) Carpenter was born Feb. 16, 1946 to Edward and Bessie Kozak of Pine City. She grew up on the farmstead that belonged to her grandfather James Kozak. She grew up with her two older brothers, Ted and Ben and her cousin Dean Strassner, who lived next door. They enjoyed many years of hunting, fishing, swimming and waterskiing. These were cherished childhood memories for JoAnn.
Corinne J. Harrity, age 82, formerly of South Minneapolis, passed away Jan. 8, 2012. She was born to Ruben and Olga Anderson on Feb. 23, 1929 on the family farm near Lake Pokegama, Pine City. Corinne graduated from Pine City High School in 1945. She lived in the Chicago, Ill. area for 15 years before returning to Minnesota in 1962. She was a loving wife, mother, and devoted grandmother. She worked as an executive secretary at Honeywell. Corinne enjoyed music, song and dance.
JoAnn Mary Carpenter, age 65, of Pine City, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012.
Joseph Charles "Joe" LoBello, age 53, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Pine City.
Glenn Johnson, age 91, of Pine City died Jan. 18 at Pine Medical Health Care Center in Sandstone.
Penny Kaye Barnes was born on March 28, 1932 in St. Paul, Minn., to Henry and Laura (Forbes) Kaye. Penny graduated from St. Paul Central High School and continued her education at Rasmussen School of Business in St. Paul.
Helen Victoria Anderson Oberg passed away at the Mille Lacs Nursing Home on Jan. 12, 2012 where she has been a resident since her major stroke on March 29, 2011.
An open house memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Pine City American Legion for Phyllis Johnson.
Christine M. Johnson of Wahkon, Minn., passed away on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012 after losing the battle with cancer she had fought since March of 2008. She was 59 years old.
Tom Sommer, age 49, of Little Falls, formerly of Pine City, died suddenly early Wednesday morning, Dec. 28 at Essentia Health Center Hospital in Sandstone. Tom was born on July 5, 1962 in Rush City, Minn. Tom is survived by his children Shannon Sommer and Jared Sommer, both of Rogers, Minn. He is also survived by his parents Ilene and Butch Sommer of Pine City; brothers Jim Sommer of Pine City, Steve Sommer of Orlando, Fla.; nieces Shiann and Lauren; nephews Nick, Tyler, and Nathan; as well as many special aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by an infant son Jeremy Sommer; a sister Kelly Sommer Gallimore; an infant niece Megan; grandparents Dallas Teich, Beatrice Teich - LaTourelle, Dewey LaTourelle, Henry and Evelyn Sommer. A private memorial service was held on Friday, Dec. 30, 2011.
Leland A. Magnuson, age 81, a resident of Sandstone, died Jan. 5, 2012 at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. Leland was born on Sept. 26, 1930 in Center City, Minn. to Frank "Emil" and Gertrude Magnuson. The family moved to Dairyland in 1933, where he attended grade school at Stevens School and then attended Superior Central High through the 10th grade. He worked for REA for two years before entering the United States Air Force in 1948. While in the service, he completed his high school education while in Bellview, Neb. as well as some college courses. During his military career he was stationed in a number of countries such as Japan, Korea, Guam, Vietnam, Thailand and the Azores/Portugal. In 1972, Leland retired from the Air Force after 24 years of service as a Master Sergeant. After his retirement, he returned to his roots in Minnesota where he met his wife, Judith Luchau. They were married on Aug. 24, 1985 in Sandstone. Leland was active on the School Board, and the Township and County Government in various different capacities. Leland was known to be a "Jack of all trades" and could fix or try to fix anything. He wrote and submitted letters to the editor in the local newspapers that many people enjoyed reading.
Phyllis Irene Johnson passed away Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011 at Walker Methodist Health Center in South Minneapolis at the age of 73. A memorial service will be held sometime in January. A notice of location, date and time will be published in the Pine City Pioneer. Cremation service was entrusted to Swanson Funeral Chapel, Pine City.
Betty Sivigny, age 71 of Pine City, passed away Christmas Eve from emphysema. She was born to Richard and LaRayne Hirt on March 7, 1940. She married Oral Sivigny on Oct. 25, 1958 and was married 53 years. She is survived by husband, Oral; children, Theresa (David) Paulson, Julie (Thomas) Strauss, Ronald (Brenda) and Donald (Shelley); nine grandchildren, three great- grandchildren; sisters, Pat Becker, Donna Lind and Sharon Fuchs. She will be missed by everyone who knew her. Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, Dec. 30, 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 19921 Nightingale St NW, Oak Grove. Doris Pauline Johnson passed away Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011 at Ecumen Parmly Lifepointes Nursing Home in Chisago City at the age of 74.
Lydia Adeline Anderson, the daughter of John and Theresa (Haberman) Pavek, was born May 18, 1913 on the family farm located east of Beroun, Minn. She grew up there and attended rural District No. 25 School through the 8th grade.
Ardoth (Ardy) Karas passed away Dec. 2, 2011 surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with esophageal cancer. He was born April 6, 1917 to Frank and Christina (Toman) on the family farm located east of Pine City.
Paul E. Millette, age 84, formerly of the Minneapolis metro area, Hinckley, Rush City and Pine City, died Nov. 9 at Grace Point Crossing Nursing Home, Cambridge, Minn.
Clara Elizabeth (Mason) Pugsley, 91, of Pine City, died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011 at the Lakeside Medical Center in Pine City.
Florence Bongard, age 92, of Pine City and formerly of Rush City, died Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 29) at Suite Living in North Branch.
Mabel Gladys Thieman was born July 20, 1913 in Lankin, N.D. to John and Mary (Gardner) Peil. At an early age, Mabel and her family moved to a farm east of Pine City. She married Richard Thieman in 1930 at a ceremony at the Pine County Fairgrounds Grandstand. Several area businesses provided gifts for the lucky couple.
Beverly Patricia (Pat) Wiener was called home by Jesus on Nov. 26, 2011, following a tragic accident at her home in Chengwatana Township in Pine County. She was 79 years of age.
Fannie F. Olson, age 88, Sandstone, died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011 at Essentia Health in Sandstone, Minn. She was born Aug. 24, 1923 near Grindstone Lake in Dell Grove Township, Pine County, Minn. to Jacob and Lena (Vork) Ploeger. She attended school at Grindstone Lake through first grade, Groningen Country School for grades 2-7 and Sandstone schools for grades 7-12.
Pat Wiener, age 79, died Saturday, Nov. 26 at Essentia Medical Center in Sandstone as a result of an accident at her home in Chengwatana township, rural Pine City. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1 at Journey North Church, 840 Main St. South, Pine City. Visitation is on Wednesday, Nov. 30 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Journey North Church, and also on Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church. Ralph Henry Ammann, age 75 of rural Pine City, and formerly of Richfield, Minn., passed away at his home on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2011.
Christine K. Thompson passed away Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, at her home in Mora, Minn. surrounded by her loving family.
Brendan Mark Christenson, the son of Clarence and Julia (Spellman) Christenson, was born Dec. 16, 1957, at Rush City, Minn. He died at his home in Minneapolis on Nov. 3, 2011, having reached the age of 53 years.
Rose Marie Erhart was born in Milwaukee, Wis. on April 22, 1922 to John and Frances (Kloskowski) Kloskin. At an early age she moved to Holdingford, Minn. where she graduated from high school in 1939.
Frank Oren Real died peacefully on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011 at the age of 79. Frank is survived by his wife, Anne Crider Real of Grasston; three children: Stella Teresa Real Werner and her husband Steven of Pine City; Rachel Kim Nelson and her husband James of San Jose, Calif.; Anthony Frank Real and his fiance Janet Hill of Corinth, Miss.; three stepchildren: Keith Crider of Eagan; Alan Crider and his wife Krissy of Mora; Lila Syverson and her husband Kent of Eau Claire, Wis. Frank is also survived by 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Janet Myra Pals was born April 6, 1939 in Robbinsdale, Minnesota to James and Olive (Churchill) Bell. Eventually her parents divorced and along with her four siblings, Ellen, Sy, Martha and Gary, she grew up in Pine City. While attending high school, she was active in cheerleading and making lots of friends. With her shy, but bubbly personality, she made friendships that lasted a lifetime.
Evangeline "Vangie" Johanson, age 91 of Pine City, died Sunday, Oct. 30 at Fairview-Lakes Medical Center in Wyoming, Minn. Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 3 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with visitation from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Swanson Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Interment will be in Birchwood Cemetery. The complete obituary will be in next week's edition of the Pine City Pioneer.
Stanley "Spike" Raymond Wiener passed away Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011 at his home. He was surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Stan was a family man, a friend to many, and a fair and honest business man for many years in the community.
