A part of Marine on St. Croix's history died on Jan. 17, 2012. The community lost Doris Strand. Where was everyone?
We always seem to lament that times were better in the past and that things are now going somewhere in a hand basket. This lamentation is somewhat justified in the eyes of historians who are looking ahead to a real desert of information brought on by the habits of current generations.
Kudos to the great people who conceived and brought to fruition the new Marine Community Library. It is a gem nested in the heart of our city.
The Editor of the Messenger has inserted himself into politics and apparently leans toward the Democrat Party. After criticizing the Republican reply to the President's State of the Union Address, he failed to point out that all the President's promises about Hope and Change have been a failure. President Obama was touted as the "Uniter," but the country is more polarized than ever due to his "Politics of Envy."
We are all aware that the state requires auto insurance and that if you didn't have proof when stopped by authorities, you were in trouble. When last I bought my license tabs I was not required to show proof of insurance. Evidently the state would just rather collect the fees. I assume this partiulcar law was prone to violation.
I wanted to take a minute to say thank you. I am from the State of Minnesota, but have been living in Texas for a number of years now. I recently took my wife and three young boys to Minnesota for vacation during the Christmas holidays to visit family in the Stacy area. One of the reasons we went was for my boys to get a chance to play hockey outside on an outdoor rink or pond. All three of my boys play hockey here in the Houston area, but have never had a chance to play this great sport outside under the lights in the cold.
I was fairly disappointed in your story about Shawn Otto. It seemed to me to be more an attempt to sell his book than anything real about science. From the description, the book would seem to be a conspiracy theory, and I'm not interested.
This is in reference to J. Calhoun's letter to the editor. You may have done some research, but you really should look farther than the Heritage Foundation for your information. They only tell you part of the story. I learned about the Great Depression in history class. Yes, the tax rate was low, but the reason for the growth was not job growth or manufacturing. People were encouraged to buy stock and they did in big numbers, whether or not they had the money to do so. People borrowed money to play the stock market and had ticker tape machines so they could follow it in their homes. This made the stock market rise dramatically. The time period in the 1920s is called the roaring 20s for this reason; everything in excess. However, you ignore the long term consequences of investing and living on borrowed money. You failed to mention that this lead to the biggest depression in U.S. history, Black Thursday, Oct. 29, 1929.
We received a copy of the CHRISTmas Boy in our Country Messenger last week. We started reading it and found it to be such a beautiful story. So therefore we simply had to attend the ARC Christmas Festival, which presented the stage story at the Association Retreat Center in East Farmington, Wis. Steve Gamble and his team of young and old actors presented a beautiful story and music of the real true meaning of Christmas. We thank all who participated and it will be one of our highlights of this Christmas Season.
All of us in this community realize how difficult it is to balance and manage a school district. It is important for School Board candidates be committed to improving our district rather than undermining what works for kids. I am voting for Rob Rapheal for School Board. He has given our current school board a “no nonsense” stance to what is needed to challenge and keep high achieving kids in our district. This school district works and needs to be supported by its residents. My two girls (both high achievers thanks to their Mother and FL Schools) are my measure to that success and I am very satisfied. Forest Lake Schools have given them many great opportunities like AP courses, extra-curricular activities, friends, and insight into their futures. I mention just these because of all the education professionals along the way it takes to make them happen. Rob gets it. He is a Computer Engineer/current School Board President that knows what education by good teachers with resources will bring to the future of all our students. I know that my vote to re-elect Rob Rapheal to the school board and a vote to renew our current operating levy will bring good results. Our schools are worth it.
